Red Centre
Red Centre by Travelscene Samford
Now a lot of us travel all around the world and neglect to make the time to see our own unique and beautiful country so I thought I would talk a little about our “Red Centre”. Now before you recoil in horror at the thought of pitching a tent and not bathing for three days, I should point out that we can experience the outback in some pretty comfy surroundings.
For most of us a trip like this is a once in a lifetime experience so if you’re spending all that money on flights or The Ghan train then please don’t make the mistake of only having two nights there before coming home. Even if you’re short on time you should try and plan two nights in Ayers Rock, one night in Kings Canyon and then two nights in Alice Springs.
You can choose to do this on a shoestring budget, a moderate budget or if you want to treat yourself do I have some places for you. One such please is situated on a secluded sand dune close to the border of the dual World Heritage listed Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, Voyages Longitude 131° is arguably one of the best luxury wilderness camps in the world. As one of only 30 guests, you have your own private view of Uluru (Ayers Rock). This wilderness camp in Australia’s Red Centre is a deluxe camping experience like no other, it’s not cheap but their tariffs are all-inclusive and it’s an amazing experience.
By day, journey into the homeland of Anangu (the local Aboriginal people) by 4WD. Embark on a base walk of Uluru (Ayers Rock). Hike through the Valley of the Winds at Kata Tjuta (the Olgas), take ride on a Harley Davidson, or take a birds-eye view in a helicopter. By night, dine under a canopy of stars accompanied by the ancient sounds of a lone didgeridoo at the award-winning Sounds of Silence dinner. And after, tour the southern night sky with a resident astronomer.
Next onto Kings Canyon where you pass through the eerie formations of weathered rock known as ‘The Lost City’. As you ascend from this sunken paradise, night begins to fall. The sun stretches out across the vast wilderness, setting the sky ablaze with colour. The renowned ‘Sounds of Firelight’ dinner featuring six delicious courses and flawless service, set against a backdrop of a star-speckled sky, ends a perfect day.
Last, but not least, Alice Springs. Here you could be riding a camel down a dry riverbed, or watching the old Ghan steam into the station. Maybe you’re sailing above the mighty MacDonnell Ranges in a hot air balloon, or enjoying bush tucker under the stars. No matter what you do here, you’ll discover that the romance of Outback Australia is alive and well in the Alice. The early days of European settlement are well-preserved too, with buildings like the old jail and original Telegraph Station still standing. You’ll also discover that the beauty and intrigue of Aboriginal culture is a highlight of your visit.
